DIY 2 Tone Cabinet Remodel

Ever have those projects that every time you get an itch to do a new project, you always come back to it but never really get the guts up to do it? Well that was how I felt about painting our kitchen cabinets. Ever since I have been living on my own (aka college), I have dreamed of having a white kitchen. When we bought out house the cabinets had recently been redone in a grey color, and while I liked it, it still wasn't what I truly wanted. So every time I'd say, hey babe let's do a project, I always chose something else because painting the cabinets just seemed too hard and too much work.

Well we finally bit the bullet and I am so, so glad we did. I LOVE how much having white cabinets brightens up the space.

I did decide to leave grey on the bottom. I really did like the grey color, just knew I wanted white. So to cut down on the work load, we decided to try out just the top ones and see how we liked them. It turned out I liked them so much two-tone I am not even entertaining the thought of painting the bottom ones.

Here is a little before and after preview:

I can tell a huge difference in the brightness of the space and it truly does make it feel larger.

On Friday after work I stopped by Lowe's and spent over an hour choosing the perfect shade of white. Who knew there were THAT many shades of white to choose from in the first place. I ended up choosing a Sherwin Williams color called Fundamental White. I liked it because it was bright, crisp, clean, and I didn't see much yellow undertone to it. I decided to go with the SW Infinity paint, because I truly wasn't sure what kind of base paint was already on the cabinets, and the lady at Lowe's had me convinced the this paint would be a one coat and done job. Needless to say it took 4 coats, and in my opinion was not worth the extra $16 for the Infinity line vs the basic SW line.

Friday night I stripped all of the cabinet doors off and removed all of the hardware. Our house seriously looked like a tornado had come through it.

I then spent all day Saturday and the first half of Sunday painting 4 coats on the cabinets and the cabinet doors. I still have to paint the inside of the doors, but decided they would be much easier to do once we got them rehung.  I did not have to sand anything, I literally just kept applying coats and letting them dry until I was happy with the results. I let everything dry for several hours, and then had C come and re-install the doors back to the cabinets. I also did a touch up coat on our backsplash, and painted the window trim the same white as the cabinets so that it would blend better.

So thankful we finally decided to bite the bullet and get this project done. To only have cost $50 it is truly making a huge difference in our home.

I hope you all had a great weekend! Here is to a good week!
